NHS or private ADHD assessment: things to consider

Waiting times for adult ADHD assessments on the NHS can be long — in some areas, several years. It is understandable that many people look at private options.

A private assessment can be much quicker, but it can be expensive, and costs vary widely. Before booking, it is worth checking a few things.

First, who will assess you? Look for a specialist who is registered with a recognised professional body, such as the General Medical Council for psychiatrists, and who follows NICE guidance.

Second, what happens after diagnosis? If you hope to take medication, find out whether the provider offers titration and how much it costs. Ask whether your GP is likely to agree to a shared care agreement afterwards, so that ongoing prescriptions come through the NHS. GPs are not obliged to accept shared care, and some will not do so for private diagnoses, so it is worth asking your practice before you pay.

Third, what is included? Some providers charge separately for the report, follow-up appointments or letters for your employer.

Be wary of services that promise a diagnosis, offer very short assessments, or put pressure on you to book quickly.

If you live in England, you may also be able to choose a different NHS-funded provider with a shorter wait, through the Right to Choose. This is free at the point of use.

There is no single right answer. The best choice depends on your needs, your budget and how you are coping while you wait.
