Affordable ADHD Support UK

When everyone else seems to have it together

It can feel as though everyone else received an instruction manual you never got. Colleagues hit deadlines without visible effort. Friends remember birthdays, keep tidy houses and answer messages the same day. Meanwhile you know exactly what it cost you to get through the same Tuesday — and the comparison stings.

The comparison is rigged from the start. You are measuring your behind-the-scenes footage against everyone else’s highlight reel. You see their results; you feel your effort. What you do not see is their effort, their support systems, or the things they quietly struggle with. And what they do not see is the extra work your brain is doing just to keep pace.

There is another distortion too. Many people with ADHD discount their own strengths automatically — the creativity, the calm in a crisis, the ability to hyperfocus when something matters — while counting other people’s ordinary competence as proof of their own failure. If your strengths feel worthless and your struggles feel defining, the scales have been tampered with.

A fairer comparison is with your own starting point. Are you handling something this month that would have floored you last year? Have you found one strategy that genuinely helps? Progress measured against yourself is real; progress measured against an imagined average person is a game you cannot win.

When the urge to compare strikes, it can help to get curious instead of critical. What exactly do I think they have that I lack? Is it actually true? Often the answer reveals a need — more structure, more support, more rest — that you could begin to meet directly, rather than a verdict on your worth.
