Right to Choose: looking after everyday life while you wait

Finding a possible assessment route can bring relief. You have made a decision, spoken to your GP and started moving towards answers. Then another wait begins, and everyday life carries on with the same missed appointments, unfinished tasks and exhausting effort.

Right to Choose may offer an alternative NHS referral pathway in England where the eligibility conditions are met. It is not a guarantee of an immediate appointment, a particular diagnosis or medication. Different providers have different arrangements, and there may be further waiting after assessment. Ask for current information rather than relying on someone else’s experience online.

While you wait, separate the assessment question from the practical question. “Do I have ADHD?” belongs with a qualified clinician. “What would make my mornings less chaotic?” is something you can begin exploring now. You do not have to prove the cause of a difficulty before trying a reminder or changing a routine.

Choose one pressure point. If leaving the house is regularly difficult, put essentials together the night before. If appointments are missed, use one calendar with a reminder that gives you time to prepare. If a task never gets started, make the first step smaller: opening the letter rather than dealing with every bill.

Keep brief notes about what is hard and what helps. These can support a future clinical conversation, but they do not need to become another demanding project. A few dated examples from home, work or education are usually more useful than pages of self-criticism. Record the effort involved as well as what others can see.

If your health worsens, contact your GP rather than waiting for the assessment to address everything. Coaching can offer practical support with goals and routines, but it is not healthcare or an NHS Right to Choose service. Check official NHS choice guidance and your provider’s updates, then give yourself permission to focus on making this week more manageable.
